Electrical Instructions for
Motor and Drive hook-up
Swim Gym

.
I M P O R T A N T !!!!
Before you install the AC Tech Drive: Please have a QUALIFIED ELECTRICIAN – either industrial or commercial – read and understand the manual. If they have questions regarding the installation, our customer service department is available to answer those questions or they will put your electrician in touch with someone who can.

Your drive comes with a manual in the shipment box and there is an instruction sheet that explains how to install the remote control station properly. Your drive also comes with a preprogrammed EPM chip. We will send you a chip programmed with Swim Gym’s parameters and you should replace the existing chip with the new one from us.

The AC Tech drive is INDOOR rated only and MUST BE installed in a low humidity and dust free INDOOR location or any appropriate NEMA rated enclosure.

THE SGX-5 TAKES 40 AMPS AND THE SGX-7 TAKES 50 AMPS TO OPERATE MAXIMALLY.
USE #8 WIRE MINIMUM FROM THE BREAKER TO THE DRIVE

Shielded cable must run from the inverter drive to the remote control station. 16 gauge / 4 conductor (4 wire) Teflon jacket shielded cable. We recommend that you place the remote control station in a shade of some kind to make it easier to read the LED keypad.

If you locate the drive outside, it must be out of the direct sun and installed in a NEMA 4 enclosure of sufficient size to allow the drive to operate at below 50 degrees Celcius – regardless of the ambient outdoor temperature.

All equipment supplied by Swim Gym, Inc. must be installed and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines and must be in compliance with local, state, and federal building and safety codes.

  1. From the pool owners’ breaker panel to fiberglass drive enclosure:
run two (2) #8 awg fed with a 40 amp to pole breaker and a #10 green
    ground wire.

  2. Connect incoming power to L1 and L2 on top of the drive.

  3. From the drive to the motor : run three (3) #10 hot wires and
    one (1) # 10 ground wire.

  4. Wire motor leads per the 230 volt (low voltage) diagram on the motor
    and ground the motor.

  5. Next, to install the remote keypad: run to the keypad location and then install the remote box (small beige box) and
pull in four (4) conductor 18 gauge shielded cable with Teflon jacket. Swim Gym will provide 5’ of this wire. Should you need more cable, you may contact Swim Gym to purchase any length you need. NOTE: It is not recommended to install keypad facing into the direct sunlight. You may want to build some kind of shade enclosure to make reading the keypad easier.

  6. Install a 24” pigtail (#10 green) on the ground terminal on top of the drive.
    Attach the pigtail to:
    a) ground from panel
    b) ground from motor
    c) shield from remote cable (braided or foil wrap)
    d) conductor # “ 2” from keypad
    e) conductor # “2” from drive control wiring terminal strip
THE ABOVE WIRES MUST ALL BE CONNECTED TOGETHER.

  7. Use the template provided with the keypad to cut holes in the cover of the
remote j-box. Apply a thin film of silicon grease to both sides of the gasket
provided with keypad. Mount the keypad onto the outside of the j-box cover.
BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO OVER-TIGHTEN AND STRIP THE SCREWS!

  8. Wire the keypad with:

    Black = TXA Red = TXB Brown = 11 White = 2

    (SEE ATTACHED DRAWING!)

The shield does not get connected to anything at the remote location.

  9. Make connections at the drive control wiring terminal strip using the color
    code given above.
NOTE: LEAVE ENOUGH LENGTH TO ROUTE CONTROL WIRING AS FAR
AS PHYSICALLY POSSIBLE FROM ANY POWER WIRING. THE
MAGNETIC FIELD FROM THE POWER WIRING CAN CREATE
    INTERFERENCE ON THE CONTROL CIRCUIT.

  10. INSTALL A JUMPER BETWEEN CONTROL TERMINALS 1 & 2.

  11. Carefully remove the factory EPM chip from the front of the drive using
needle-nose pliers and then install the pre-programmed EPM chip that you
received from Swim Gym into the drive.

  12. Turn on the breaker and start the Swim Gym pump using the green “run”
    (1) button on the remote keypad. If the motor is running backwards (water is
entering the exit port), stop the pump using the red “stop” (o) button. Turn off
power at the breaker, then wait for the drive to shut down and swap the wires
connected to T-1 and T-2 at the bottom of the drive. The motor and pump should now be running with correct rotation.

  13. Turn on the breaker and start the pump. Run the speed up to maximum using
the (^) key on the remote keypad, observing the waterflow. It should be moving briskly. Allow it to run for 20 minutes to test thoroughly.

Your Swim Gym is now ready for use. When using the start button, it will scroll
up to the last speed at which it running. Use up and down arrows to adjust the
    speed.

If your Swim Gym does not operate properly, check that all the installation
Instructions have been followed properly before contacting Swim Gym.

NOTE: The motor may emit a high pitched hum when running below 60hz.
This sound is normal with motors connected to variable frequency
drives. If you choose to baffle this sound with a motor cover, you must
leave adequate ventilation openings for the motor cooling.
